Recipients of The Southern Cross of Honor

Recipients of The Southern Cross of Honor from Madison, Jackson, and Marshall Counties

In the year 1899, the United Daughters of the Confederacy began awarding recognition badges to the aging soldiers of the South. Called the Southern Cross of Honor, the requirements for this award were strict. “No Crosses will be furnished by the Custodian,” said Rule 2, Section 1, “until Certificates of Eligibil-ity have been properly filed by the veterans and certified by two or more officers of the Camp.” Rule 3 stated that living veterans would receive their Crosses first, with descendants of deceased veterans being allowed to apply for them thereafter. However, Rule 6 specified that no one but the veterans themselves would be allowed to wear the Cross. Rule 4 said the Crosses should be presented on Memorial Day, Robert E. Lee’s or Jefferson Davis’ birthday, or at another date selected by the UDC members of each state.

Fortunately for posterity, Rule 2, Section 4 stated, “Each Chapter shall keep a book alphabetically arranged in which is re-corded the name and command of every soldier or descendant of a soldier who receives the Cross, so that there may be no possibil-ity of bestowing a second Cross upon the same person.” Somewhere in many towns across the South these local UDC Chapter records must still exist. The list of medals presented by the Virginia Clay Clopton Chapter, United Daughters of the Confederacy, is available on microfilm in the Heritage Room of the Huntsville-Madison County Public Library. llhile not alphabetical, the roster is very valuable for genealogists because it includes veterans not only from Huntsville, but also from neighboring counties — and even other states. Furthermore, many of these men do not appear in the 1907 Alabama Confederate Veteran Census.

The first Crosses were awarded in Huntsville in 1903, with most following within a period of a few years. A handful date to as late as the early 1920s. It is known that some Crosses were awarded after that time, such as to three black associate members (Matthew Gray, Essex Lewis, and Henry Bolden) of the Egbert J. Jones Camp, United Confederate Veterans. Perhaps these additional records will turn up some day.

The following Confederate veterans were awarded the Southern Cross of Honor by the Virginia Clay Clopton Chapter, United Daughters of the Confederacy. Note that in cases where a relative of a deceased veteran applied, the place of residence may not be the same as the veteran’s. Also, the units should always be double checked with the military records, since the preparers several times appear to have confused the infantry and the cavalry (e. g. #128 and #129).

  1. Thank you so much for honoring your family in this way. I am a current member of the UDC and have 3 ancestors proven and still working on more. This
has been a passion for me for many years. Did someone in your family receive the UDC Cross of Honor? Would love to know more about these brave and honorable men.

    Cool website.
