Generation No. 2

2. JOHN2 HALL, SR (INSTANT1) was born January 13, 1706/07 in Prince George County, Virginia, and died 1779 in Edgecombe County, North Carolina. He married ELIZABETH BOTTS 1732 in Virginia. She was born 1714, and died Unknown.

Notes for JOHN HALL, SR:
Genealogy.com: Virginia Genealogies #2, 1600s-1800s
John Hall, the fourth child and third son of Instant and Mary Hall of Prince George, was born January 13, 1709/10, and is the other John Hall confused with the John Hall already studied, who married Anne Bolling. He was born and raised in Prince George and the first mention of him in Amelia is the purchase of 200 acres from William Hudson in 1737, which he sells Elisha Estes, in 1742, evidently not liking its location, for, in September of that year he purchases from Henry Robertson of Prince George 150 acres on Deep Creek, adjoining the property of Robert Bolling. He now is located in the same neighborhood of the property of the other John Hall. They therefore must have known each other for a number of years subsequent to this date. In 1745 he adds to this property 779 acres in the same neighborhood which he purchased from William Watson, and his home becomes firmly established. By thrift he prospered so that in 1768 he was able to purchase in the same locality 459 acres on the south side of Deep Creek from Nathaniel Robertson for L240 (the L should have a - thru it), and the next year he with the consent of his wife Elizabeth sells a less desirable tract of 140 acres to Henry Ferguson, which was witnessed by his son Bowler. Without question John Hall was a man of business acumen and had acquired valuable property judicially selected, and that he was of some means is evidenced by the purchase of a number of slaves in 1775 from Edward and Thomas Bolling Munford, the latter his neighbor, and Edward Munford at that date residing in Halifax County, North Carolina. The maiden name of his wife is not known, but his brother William, who lived near married Ann Bott, daughter of Thomas Bott by his second marriage, and it has been surmised that his wife was a daughter of Thomas by his first marriage. There is however no recorded authority to substantiate this. John Hall made his will in February, 1779 and died in June. His wife Elizabeth is devised property for life to revert to his only son Bowler; Bowler is devised practically all his holdings except a negro woman apiece to each of his married daughters, Ann Purnall, Milly DeJarnette, and Dyce Fowlkes, and a negro girl to his granddaughter Dyce Hall. Witnesses to the will were Richard Jones. Thomas Bolling Munford and son Bowler, the first two have already been seen earlier in this study. The name Bowler intrigues one. It is seen in the Cocke family, derived from the marriage of Richard Cocke (1672-1720) to his first wife Ann Bowler (1675-1705), daughter of Col. Thomas Bowler of the Rappahannock River and his wife Tabitha Underwood. Their sonBowler Cocke inherited Bremo and his family was well known to the Bollings and the John Halls. There is no known record of any relationship whatever that caused John Hall to name his only son Bowler. It is also known that the Bowler name was not continued in the Hall descendants. There are no dates known of the members of John Hall's family, and his will shows that he and his wife had the following children:
1. Ann Hall, married, February 12, 1756, William Purnell of Maryland and Virginia. William Purnell settled in that part of Amelia county which, in 1754, became Prince Edward. His wife died September 5, 1814, "aged 73 years, 10 months and 15 day," which gives her birth October 20, 1740. Their son John Purnall (Purnell) was one of the executors of his uncle Bowler Hall in 1787.
2. Milly Hall married a DeJarnette. Issue.
3. Dyce Hall married John Field Fowlkes. Issue
4. Bowler Hall, date of birth and marriage not known. He married Jane, maiden name not known, and died in 1787 leaving a will.

It is of interest to note just here that Dixon Hall, 1755-1820, the grandson of John Hall and Anne Bolling married as his second wife Milly DeJarnette who died in 1815 without issue, and shortly thereafter he married a third wife Milly Hutchinson, and their daughter was Milly DeJarnette Hall, thus perpetuating the name. These wives evidently belonged to the DeJarnettes of Prince Edward County. If this connection he established it will be the first union of the families of the two John Halls under study.

Notes for WILLIAM HALL:
Genealogy.com: Virginia Genealogies #2, 1600s-1800s
William Hall, the youngest child of Instant and Mary Hall of Prince George was born April 22, 1721. It is not known wheny they died, but it was prior to 1738, for in that year William Hall chose his brother John to be his guardian. Not long thereafter he married Ann Bott, born in December 1723/4, daughter of Thomas Bott of Chesterfield County. The exact date is not known but he had a daughter to be married with his consent of record in 1758. He settled in Amelia not far from his brother John and in 1746 bought 250 acres of land from John Blanchat, beginning at Willson's corner. In 1759 his brother James Hall deeds him a negro man, and relinquishes all title claim etc. . . . in the estate of his brother Instance Hall, dec'd, as devised to Thomas Hall, the son of William Hall. In this way Instant Hall, born Oct 20, 1707, is found on the records of Amelia, which would indicate that he did not marry or leave descendants, but did devise to his nephew Thomas Hall, then a minor. William was not as well off as his brother John, but his children were well provided for in the their marriages. He, His wife Ann, and her father Thomas Bott all left wills, which marked information as to the children. The will of Thomas Bott, dated August 6, 1776, and proved in Chesterfield names inter alios sons Miles, William and John, daughter Ann, wife of William Hall, granddaughter the daughter of Mary, wife of John Willson, wife Ann. William Hall left a will dated April 30, 1778 which was not proved, but an inventory of his estate is of record in 1783. In the will he mentions wife Ann, daughter Ann Archer, granddaughters Mary and Ann Willson, and grandson Wm. Williams Hall. Executor Miles Bott. Ann Hall left a will dated February 11, 1785 and recorded in November. She mentions son Thomas and children, not named, daughter Ann Archer, daughter (Mary Israel) Willson, granddaughter Mary Israel Elam and grandson William Williams Hall. Executors: Brother John Bott and daughter Ann Archer. The exact date of death of Ann Hall is not known but before November 1785 and after the death of her nephew Bowler Hall. It was seen in the will of Bowler her nephew be provided that she should live and be cared for in one of his houses. In 1785 all of her children were married and there were grandchildren. This is shown clearly under the children of William Hall and Ann Bott which are as follows:
1. Mary Israel Hall, seemingly eldest child, marriage bond June 22, 1758 with William Hall (father) security, to John Willson. They had a daughter Mary Israel whose marriage bond was dated September 15, 1778 to Barclay Elam. It is to be noted that there was a large Elam family in Amelia, at a later date. Israel name first seen with James Hall, Sr.
2. Ann Hall marriage bond, December 1776, to John Archer, with brother Thomas Hall as security. Their daughter Mary Archer whose marriage bond dated April 2, 1790, as Polly Archer, to her first cousin Instance Hall, born in Goochland August 10, 1770, with his brother William Williams Hall as security. John Hall sold John Archer in 1770, 185 acres for L200(the-again) on Smack Creek.
3. Thomas Hall the only son was a minor in 1765 when his father William Hall gave written consent as shown by the records of Goochland County for a marriage bond to be issued to him to Frances Williams, daughter of William Williams of Goochland. They had two sons, William Williams Hall and Instance Hall, just seen to have married his first cousin Mary Archer.

5. BOWLER3 HALL (JOHN2, INSTANT1) was born 1738 in Virginia, and died 1787 in North Carolina. He married JANE MARTIN 1757 in Virginia. She was born 1740 in Virginia, and died Unknown.(OURS)

Notes for BOWLER HALL:
Knowledge of Bowler Hall is determined solely from records. He inherited as seen the property of his father John Hall. He sells the land on the south side of Deep Creek to Jeremiah Bradshaw for L300(the - again) early in June, 1782, and in the same month purchases land adjoining himself and the estates of Richard Jones and Thomas Bolling Munford, previously seen associated with Hohn Hall and Anne Bolling, on both sides of Little Creek, from Daniel Verser for L221(the -), 15 shillings. In June and July 1785, with wife Jane, he sells two tracts of land totaling 123 1/2 acres to Branch Osborne and John Blankenship respectively. The maiden name of his wife is not known. His will dated February 1, 1787, and proved September 27, 1787, shows that he died between these dates, leaving property to his wife Jane, naming nine children all under 21 years as follows: Stephen, Mathew, John, Thomas, Richard, Dyce, Elizabeth, Ann and Milly. Five sons and four daughters are seen, and he stipulates that all are to be educated. He mentions his father John and states that "my Aunt Ann Hall etc. . . . " to continue "to live in the house she now occupies." The executors were Richard Jones, Jr., Henry Ferguson, Thomas Jones, John Howson, John Purnall (Purnell) was his nephew, and James DuPuy was connected with the Purnells in Prince Edward County. The others were friends and neighbors. The name Milly seems to have been for Mildred, but continues through several generations. The descendants of John Hall and his son Bowler are to be found in Prince Edward County. John Howson was also executor of the will of his father, John Hall in 1779, acting with Richard Jones, Thomas Bolling Munford and Bowler, the last three seemingly also to have witnessed the will. Bowler Hall was 2nd. Lieut. in Capt. Rich'd Jones' Company of Militia, 1777. Wm. and Mary Quar. October 1935, p. 399.

Bowler Hall lived in Virginia in the 1700's. We know that he married a Native American woman and had at least one child named Elijah. Elijah was married to Mary VanSant and was a gunsmith in SC. His son was Elbert, who married Louiza Pelt. Their daughter Julia Hall married a gentleman named Southern Fox and was a midwife in Lexington County South Carolina and had several children, one of whom was my beloved grandmother Estelle Fox Boatwright Janfaucett@aol.com researcher

>Carol, According to Leonardo Andrea papers, James E. Hall also had the middle name Brennan, named after Eugene Brennan, who appeared to be a friend of the Burt family. In his extraction of Nancy Burt Hall's will, it says son, James Eugene Brennan Hall. This was taken from the WPA copy from Anderson Co., SC. The typescript copy at the South Carolina Archives says, son James Eugine. I believe your Sallie Loveless & Sarah Loveless are indeed the same person. I am attaching a file which I copied over from a another program & did a little editing. I will have a full printout for you at the reunion. I first saw the Hall family bible in 1990, when Robert Hall of Springhill had it, it is in very delicate condition, but I was able to hand copy the dates.
Dixie Land, another descendent took pictures of it a few years ago, but they are a little difficult to make out. Ronnie Hall has the Bible now and we are going to see if it can be treated at the AHC before it deteriorates anymore, if so, I would
like to have them microfilm the Hall family history, with group sheets.
So it would be nice to have them as complete as possible.

Matilda Loveless was the daughter of Isaac Davenport & Elizabeth Rabun..
