Family tradition: James B. Andrews' father came home from the Civil War with a hatchet which he put behind the door.  He told James B. not to bother the hatchet.  James B. could not resist the tempation and cut his hand.  His father died before 1869 or may have been killed in the War.  Ellen Reynolds Andrews (known to be the mother of James B. Andrews) subsequently married James Beam on 28 December 1869 in Montgomery Co., AL.  James B. did not like his step-father so he packed his things and left home.  He attended Friendship Baptist Church near Ramer, AL and was ordained as a deacon in 1898.  Fannie Neugent was also a member.  Her family donated the land for the church.  A handwritten note from Mary A. Neugent giving permission for her daughter to marry J. B. Andrews is attached to the marriage license in the Alabama Department of Archives and History in Montgomery.

John was councilman in Florala.  He co-owned Farmers Supply in Florala with Mr. Rodwell and Mr. McPhail.   John worked for Jackson Lumber Company and was foreman for Mr. Harlan, who owned a dairy farm.  He could add a colum of numbers as fast as he could run a pencil down the column.

           Fannie took Norman Hair to Green Bay showed him the land his Great grandfather cleared, plowed and planted.

      After the death of John, Fannie Lou purchased a home on the Opp, Highway (US 331) just north of Florala.  She tried various methods of supporting her family.  Among these were dairy farming, raising chickens, storekeeper, and seamstress.  Her Mother Lydia Ann came to live with her.
