*James Austin Prestwood, 84 past away on East Three Notch St. on Friday. “Uncle Aus” as he was known to as friends was born June 11, 1885 in Coffee County. He married Miss Mary E. Fletcher and had 8 children, 4 having passed to their reward. Mrs. Prestwood died in 1900. In 1905 Mr. Prestwood married Miss Josey Coombs of Faixfax. Surviving him are his wife and 2 sons, J.D. and A.V. Prestewood; Andalusia; 2 daughters, Mrs. H.S. Lyde, El Paso, Tx, and Mrs. Lucine Adams, Washington, D.C.; one sister, Mrs. Tommy Holloway of Coffee Springs and numerous grandchildren and relatives. Funeral services were held at the First Methodist church Sunday with Dr. W.W. Jeffries, Dr. I.W. Chalker and Dr. H.G. Threadgill officiating. The choir was composed of Messrs. Robert Ham, W.C. Boutwell, Miss Irene Faulkenberry, Mrs. Eugene Grant and Mrs. Josie Lyons. He was buried in Magnolia Cemetery beside his 1st wife. Pallbearers were grandsons: Roger, Hugh, James Morgan, James Austin, Edwin, John D. Prestwood, Joe Ford, and 3 close friends, Tom Head, Aubrey Mills and Jim Cobb. Among the out-of town attending were: Mr. N.J. and Garrett Prestwood, Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Prestwood and Mrs. Foster Prestwood of Worten, AL., Dr. Johnson, Brundridge, AL., and Mr. and Mrs. George Prestwood and son of McCullough., Ala. Mrs. John Prestwood, Mrs. Walter Jones, Mrs. Annie Laura Warfield, Pensacola, Mr. Neil Smith, Mr. T.I. Gantt of Florala.

* Three cars Collide, one driven by Hubert Douglas, another driven by Mrs. R. Bledsoe and the third by Graham C. Hollond on South Three Notch Rd. Fri., which resulted in injury to John Douglas, John Bass and Bennett Bass, all of whom were in the Douglas car.

*Local Lions Clubs took 5 new members on Thursday; Dr. W.W. Jeffries, Miles Hart, J.L. Merrill, Dr. A. E. Ray, Emmett Foreman and Ollie Clower.

* G.B. Williams living 5 miles from South Three Notch brought to the Star office an apple during the Christmas Holidays.

*Sheriff Tom head is contemplating running the following add: Found, 25 gallons Whiskey in the woods, 3 miles from Sanford Rd. Owner please call at the Sheriff’s Office.

*Death claims Mrs. S. Colvin. Mrs. Sadie Colvin, wife of Frank T. Colvin died at her home in Red Level on Thursday, age 47. Funeral services held Friday at Pigeon Creek church. Surviving her is her husband, 7 sons, 2 daughters. Frank, Foley Ala.; Aubrey Speigner; Carlos, Robert, Emit, Homer, and Wilson of Red Level. 2 daughters, Ella and Virgina of Red Level. Pallbearers were E.V. Bates, M.B. Kirvin, J.H. Stuart, E.V. Long, D. Morris and Q. Taylor.

* Joseph Carlen, 28, died Friday in a car collision. six others hurt, including Mrs. Carlen. He was returning to Charlotte from Mobile from a Christmas family Reunion. Funeral in Mobile.

*Mortgage Sale- Mortgage executed by J.D. Norris to Mrs. F.L. Corley dated Sept. 3, 1937, Probate of Covington Co., default having been made, will sell, land, on the front steps, the 29th of January,1940. Mrs. E.L. Corley Mortgagee.

*Mrs. W.H. Beall had her Mother, Mrs. C.M. Fellows and sister, Mrs. Mildred Morgan, both of Cottondale and her brother , Mr. Hugh Fellows of Abeline Tx., as Christmas guests.

*Dr. and Mrs. W.L. McCarty announce the birth of a son on the 30th inst.

*Mrs. Johnnie Ingram is visiting her daughter, Mrs. G.P. Reynolds in Atlanta.

*Marriage of Miss Martha Hall of Midway to Ferris Johns of Andalusia was Sunday Dec. 24th at the Colley home on Elm Street. - Troy Messenger

*Married Friday December 22nd, Miss Loreida Padgett of Red Level and G. Dozier Lawson of Goshen at the home of Dr. and Mrs. J. O. Colley.- Troy Messenger

* Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Brunson went to Talladega Tuesday to attend the funeral of the late Mr. Purifoy, Mr. Brunson’s Brother -in-law.

*Mrs. D.H. Childress, who was in the hospital in Pensacola, following an auto accident that killed her 7 week old infant, was brought to the home of J.R. Caton, where she is improving.

January 11,1940

*Dr. W.W. Walters, Miss Helen Morgan and Miss Gwindle White narrowly escaped injury when the auto overturned on the Highway at Riverfalls.

*Mr. and Mrs. Moots Starling are building a new home on the River Falls Road.

*Willie James Branden, 22 year old negro of New Brocton confessed to criminally assaulting Mrs. Ralph Mozley, age 26, of New Brocton.

* Malley J. Hodges, age 45, died at his home in Brewton Sunday. Funeral services held at the Adellum Church. Mr. Hodges is survived by his wife, one daughter, Olivia Hodge, Mother & Father, Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Hodges, 2 sisters, Mrs. N.D. Bradshaw of Greenwood Miss., Mrs. G.P. Mathews, Andalusia; 6 brothers, Marvin, George, Alcon, Walter, Woodraw of Andalusia and Alfonso of Eufaula. Active pallbearers: L.S. Taylor, Guy Greene, Gordie Brooks, Arlington Railey, Homer Garrett and Frank Fuqua.

* Funeral for Cecil Thagard Riley, age 25, living in Hollywood Fla. with his mother & sister, but known well in Andalusia. He collided with a transfer truck, killing him instantly on Jan. 5, 1940. Burial in was Monday in Magnolia Cemetery in Andalusia. He is survived by his Mother, Mrs. W.A. Riley, one brother, Dan Riley, and one sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Holman of Hollywood Flo.

* J.W. Blackmon died Monday, January 8th, age 63. Funeral services were Tuesday from the Liberty Church above Dozier. He is survived by his wife, 3 sons, Arthur and Bennie Blackmon, Andalusia; Lox Blackmon of Elba, 4 daughters, Mrs. Mallie Hudson, Elba; Mary Blackmon, Mrs. Minnie Meacham and Quinnie Blackmon of Andalusia, Mrs. Freeter Slater, Andalusia, one brother, Gerald Blackmon, Elba.

*Death from exposure was the verdict reached by a coroner’s jury investigating the death of Clem (Chip Heath, 40, whose body was found yesterday near a pecan grove in Enterprise. Heath was single and the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. L. B. Heath. He is survived by a brother, Ab Heath, Tx., 4 sisters, Mrs. C. Flemings, Enterprise; Mrs. E. S. Laney, Sanford, Fla.; Mrs. Joe Barron, Greenville, S.C. and Maurine Winter, Savannah, Ga.

*Mr. and Mrs. James Bruce announce the birth of a son on Dec. 31st, named James Byron Bruce.

*Mr. and Mrs. Rhueben Tucker announce the birth of a daughter on the 10th inst.

*Mr. Edgar Albritton of California is visiting his Mother, Mrs. W.H. Albritton.

*Clarence (Turk) Odom has returned to Ft. Benning after visiting his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. D.A. Odom.

January 18, 1940

* A car driven by H. Barnes of Hartford and his wife, Mrs. Bessie Barnes and his Mother, Mrs. M.E. Barnes, age 55, side swiped a truck driven by Willie Colbert, negro convict on the outskirts of Andalusia last week resulting in a broken leg for Mr. H. Barnes.

*A dead negro woman was found on the Dr. Rawl’s farm, 4 miles west of River Falls, Tuesday. She was an aged Negro & died of natural causes.

*CALVIN BARNES, well known Andalusia man died Tuesday from Blood poisoning which set in after having a tooth pulled. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Lucille Barnes, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Calvin Barnes of Route 1, Andalusia; one brother, Roscoe; Three sisters, Miss Nina Barnes, Miss Jewell Barnes and Mrs. Lloyd Holmes, all of Andalusia. Funeral services held from the Baptist Church on Wednesday.

* J.T. Foreman died near Elba on January 1st, age 33, leaves a wife and 2 children, his mother, 2 brothers, 2 sisters of Andalusia and one brother, R. D.Foreman, Winter Garden, Fla. Pallbearers were A.G. Boyett, W.C. Worley, O.C. Worley, H. W. Worley, Morgan Worley and Wallace George.

* J. N. Colvin, 69, died at his home in Rose Hill on monday. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mallie Colvin, 2 daughters, Mrs. W.R. McLaughlin, Montgomery; Miss Jewel Foy Colvin, Rose Hill; Five sons, Ralph & Glade of Andalusia, Handson, & Cecil Rosehill & Council of Montgomery. Burial in Rose Hill Cemetery held Tuesday.

*January 3rd Dr. S.C. Hamner delivered 5 babies, 2 sets were twins. Mr. and Mrs. Grady Hayes had twins at 4:30, then called to Mrs. Hayes Sister-in-law, Mrs. Sumpter Davis, who delivered another set of twins, on his way home, rushed to the hospital to deliver another baby.

* H.J. Henry, 48 and Cranford Williams, 18 are being held in city jail on charges of breaking and entering Sessoms grocery.

*Five young men pass tests for Navy; Tillman C. Bozeman, Lennell Helms, William Robert Peacock, Blondy A. and Donnell F. Fennell, brothers.

* Bankruptcy, at Montgomery Ala. In the matter of Walter Dunklin Ganey doing business as New York Store, Andalusia.

*Mr. and Mrs. Jim Gammage announce the marriage of their daughter, Evelyn, to Mr. Dock Dillard, on Dec. 19th in Crestview, Fla.

*Mrs. John D. Grider of Opp announce the engagement of her daughter, Miss Mary Wynona Martin to Douglas Griffin, of Troy. The marriage to take place Jan. 20th.

*Mrs. Zollie Wilkerson of Greenville died in Atlanta Thursday. Burial was Friday afternoon at Magnolia Cemetery. Before her marriage to Henry Wilkerson she was Miss Effie Shaver, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. H.F. Shaver of Andalusia. Three children, Henry Zollie Wilkinson, Jr., Mrs. James Willis, and Miss Sara Wilkinson of Greenville, 2 sisters, Mrs. Sidney Waits of Andalusia & Mrs. J.C. Waits of Bonifay, Fla. 2 brothers, Dr. Edward Shaver of Tampa Fl., and C.E. Shaver of Bradentown, Fla.

January 25, 1940
* W.R. Wright suffered a stroke of paralysis early Saturday night.

* R. W. Watson, 81 died Thursday night, He was born at Niceville, Fla., His home was near Hopewell Church. he is survived by 4 daughters, Mrs. K. McIntosh, Mrs. W.S. Stokes, Mrs. Lena McLeod and Miss Bessie Watson of Andalusia. 3 sons, W. N. Wright, Defuniak Spgs.,Fla., C.W. Wright, Monroeville and H.W. Wright of Pensacola. Funeral was at Hopewell Baptist Church.

* Mrs. Mary Grantham, age 81 passed away in Andalusia Wednesday night, January 17th. Funeral was held at Bradshaw Baptist Church in Coffee County Thursday, Interment in the church Cemetery.

* Henry M. Cofield, age 65 Tuesday morning. Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Effie Cofield, two sons, Edward and Frank; one daughter, Miss Nattie Lee, all of Andsalusia. Interment was made in Magnolia Cemetery.

*Mr. Wilburn Donaldson was called to Elba last week on account of the death of his father, J. Curtis Donaldson, former Coffee County Commissioner.

* Walter Payne Johns, Son of Mr. and Mrs. Lee Johns of Andalusia, Coldwater community was the first baby to be born in Covington County in 1940.
